 Research Experience

 

  Technical

  • 24 years experience in Isotope Geochemistry and stable isotope mass spectrometry including operation and maintenance of  both Gas source mass spectrometers (GSMS) and  Thermal ionisation mass spectrometers (TIMS) as well as gas extraction lines. Operated extensively VG 602D/903 and  MAT 251 GSMS and MAT 262 and VG 354 TIMS in India, UK and Japan

  • Completely indigenously fabricated  an on-line CO2 extraction system for analysing minute (mgm) quantities of carbonate samples for isotopic analyses.

  • Set up column separation chemistry for Rb, Sr, Sm, Nd at Presidency College, Calcutta and  Tokyo University, Japan

  • Experienced in Instrumental Neutron activation analyses (INAA) technique using high purity Germanium-Lithium detector and MCA.

  • Experienced   in  column  chemistry  and   Geochoronological aspects of  deep  sea  cores  by  using  Uranium-Thorium  series isotopes on a-counters.

  • Scientific expedition to Indian ocean, Arabian sea and Gulf of Aden on board cruises ORV Sagarakanya of Department of ocean development, India and RRV CHARLES DARWIN of National  Environmental  Research  Council (NERC), U.K.

 

Scientific

  • Monsoon variability and deep ocean circulation over century to million year time scale using stable and short lived radio-isotope systematics of carbonates, organic matter and water.

  • Causes of extinction events across major geological boundaries namely Precambrian/Cambrian, Permo-Triassic, Cretaceous/Tertiary, Eocene/Oligocene etc. using isotope and geochemical tracers.

  • Geochemistry and geochronology of mafic-ultramafic rocks from Singhbhum Craton using trace elements, REE, Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd and silicate stable isotope systematics.
  • Isotope hydrology, vapour transport during monsoon and arsenic contamination in Ground water of West Bengal

  • Evolution of Himalayan foreland and tectonics climate connection

  • Lignite beds of Rajasthan and Gujarat : implications to LPTM event

Guided two Ph.D. students, one on Sr-Nd geochronolgy of  Singhbhum mafic rocks  and the other on Isotopic and geochemical studies across the Eocene-Oligocene boundary, Kutch (both awarded).
